Fluoroscopy
uses x-rays to capture a moving image of certain organs while they
are functioning. The tissues of the upper GI tract are similar in
density, so Barium is used to help outline them.
The technologist will then give you a Barium milkshake to drink.
After the Barium has entered your stomach - a series of images will
be captured. During the imaging process, you may be asked to turn
from side to side and to hold several different positions, to enable
the radiologist or technologist to capture views from several angles.
When the exam is over you may be
asked to wait until the technologist or radiologist reviews the
images.
Your results will generally be available
to your physician in approximately 2-3 days, depending upon whether
we need to obtain other outside comparison exams.
Precautions:
Because of the risks of radiation exposure to the fetus, pregnant
women are advised to avoid this procedure.
