Ultrasound
is a simple, safe and painless diagnostic procedure that bounces
high-frequency sound waves off parts of the body and captures the
returning "echoes" as images. There is no injection or
radiation exposure associated with ultrasound.
Ultrasound can capture moving images
of pelvic and abdominal function, breast abnormalities, the male
reproductive system, the kidney and thyroid systems, gall bladder,
the liver and pancreas, and fetal development, among other applications.
When enhanced with a special Doppler technique, ultrasound can also
capture moving blood images of the heart and most vessels.
Oregon Imaging employs only board-certified
ultrasonographers. The sonographer will apply a conducting gel to
the patient's skin and use a transducer to pass sound waves through
his/her body and capture the echoes. Images are instantly captured
on a television-like monitor and transferred to film or videotape
for a radiologist to review and interpret. The exam typically takes
20-60 minutes.
Note:
Please see the Ultrasound Prep List for instructions on specific
procedures. It is essential that patients follow these instructions
carefully to avoid delaying the procedure or the need to reschedule
the appointment.
OIC's Ultrasound serivces are accredited
by the American College of Radiology.
