Overview

Mammography is the "gold standard" for screening and detecting breast cancer. At Oregon Imaging Centers, all of our mammography scanners are the latest state-of-the-art full field digital systems. We are both MQSA certified and ACR accredited. Digital mammography uses low-dose X-rays to capture images of the breast that are read by our sub-specialized radiologists. Benefits include better imaging of dense breast tissue and the chest wall, shorter exam times, and lower radiation dose.

Our commitment to breast health goes beyond screening mammograms. Oregon Imaging Centers has the most comprehensive set of breast health services in Lane County, and is the only facility with radiologists who are sub-specialized in mammography working on-site. In addition to screening mammograms, we offer comprehensive advanced diagnostic breast imaging including breast MRI, ultrasound, biopsy, and diagnostic mammograms.

You can review information specific to your scan by selecting from the 'study type' menu in the left column.

Prep & Safety

A stereotactic breast biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure used to obtain a breast tissue sample.

  • Please arriveĀ 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time.
  • Arrange for a family member or friend to accompany you. We require you to have a driver before being discharged.
  • Please wear a comfortable two-piece outfit.
  • Jewelry, including piercings, must be removed prior to your study. Patients are encouraged to leave all jewelry at home.
  • Do not wear deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms on the day of your mammogram, as these substances can cause artifacts on the images.
  • For your comfort, do not eat a heavy meal within two to three hours of your appointment time, because you will be lying on your stomach for the duration of the exam.
  • After consulting your physician, discontinue use of any type of anti-coagulant or blood thinning agent two to three days prior to your study (aspirin, Coumadin, ibuprofen).

For your safety, please notify our scheduling department and technologists:

  • If you believe you may be pregnant
  • If you have breast implants

The Experience

During your visit, a patient advocate will show you to the changing area and can assist you if necessary. We ask that you change into a gown that opens in the front. Our changing rooms offer secure lockers, but we encourage patients to leave valuables at home. Once changed, our patient advocate will guide you to the mammography sub-waiting area where you will find a selection of magazines and newspapers. If you prefer more privacy, please ask the patient advocate to allow you to wait in your dressing room.

When the procedure begins, the technologist will help you lie on your front on the stereotactic table with one breast hanging through an opening in the table. If requested, our nurse can offer IV conscious sedation to help make you more comfortable. Approximately 50 percent of our patients choose to be sedated. A local anesthetic is used to anesthetize the biopsy area.

A mammogram will be obtained in this position and used to ensure that the hollow biopsy needle is targeted to the precise location of interest. Once the needle is inserted, another set of images are acquired to confirm positioning, and then the tissue sample is removed. The sample is sent to the pathology laboratory for microscopic analysis.

There are two alternatives to Stereotactic biopsy:

  • a. Surgical excision
  • b. Mammographic observation of the abnormality

After The Exam

  • Please have a family member or friend accompany you to your appointment and drive you home afterward.
  • The area will be bandaged and you may experience some bruising and tenderness, which should disappear in approximately a week.
  • Typically Tylenol and one day of rest is sufficient for recovery.
  • Results are provided by the pathology laboratory to your physician and are usually made available in two or three days.

What are we looking for?

Stereotactic Breast Biopsy Studies are guided by X-rays and remove a small tissue sample, which can be evaluated by a pathologist to determine the presence of cancerous tissue.
